Explanatory note

This note is not part of the order, but is intended to indicate its general effect.

This order, which comes into force 28 days after its notification in the Gazette, specifies Assistance Dogs New Zealand and Perfect Partners Assistance Dogs Trust as organisations that may certify dogs as disability assist dogs (as defined in section 2 of the Dog Control Act 1996). Under section 75 of that Act, a disability assist dog accompanying and assisting a person with a disability, or accompanying a person genuinely engaged in the dog's training, may enter and remain—

• in any premises registered under regulations made under section 120 of the Health Act 1956; or

• in any public place.

Assistance Dogs New Zealand trains dogs to assist people, particularly children, with autism. Perfect Partners Assistance Dogs Trust trains dogs to assist people who suffer from seizures and other medically diagnosed disabilities, including autism, diabetes, neurological conditions, and psychiatric conditions.
