Recent updates to the website May 2026

We have continued to improve the NZ Legislation website, with recent changes focused largely on feedback from users.

Performance improvements

We have improved the performance of the Income Tax Act 2007 and other large legislation documents. We’ve fixed issues where some documents were slow to load and, in some cases, caused browsers to become unresponsive. We know how disruptive this was and appreciate the feedback that helped find the problem.

Improvements to the Income Tax Act 2007

Several fixes improve navigation specifically within the Income Tax Act 2007:

  • Users can now right‑click on sections within the Act and open them in a new browser tab, rather than being taken to the top of the document.

  • Fixed an issue where some links to the Income Tax Act 2007 didn’t resolve to the correct location.

Legislation table of contents

The scrolling and highlighting behaviour of the table of contents has been refined. Before, the highlighted section in the table of contents could jump ahead while the previous section was still dominant on the page. Now, the next section is highlighted only when its section heading reaches the top of the page.

Empowering provision labels

We have improved the way empowering provisions are displayed under the secondary legislation tab. Section and schedule prefixes have been added to empowering provisions, clarifying whether a provision is a section or from within a schedule.

Versions tab

We’ve made several improvements to the Versions tab to make it easier to find and navigate between different versions of legislation.

You can now sort versions by date, helping you quickly locate the most relevant version. We’ve also introduced pagination to improve performance and usability when browsing large numbers of versions.

In addition, a visual indicator now highlights the version you are currently viewing, making it easier to stay oriented as you move between versions.
