Pursuant to section 9(5) of the National Parks Act 1952 (as enacted by section 4(1) of the National Parks Amendment Act 1974), His Excellency the Governor-General, acting by and with the advice and consent of the Executive Council and on the recommendation of the National Parks Authority to the Minister of Lands, hereby makes the following order.
Order
1 Title and commencement
(1)
This order may be cited as the Fiordland National Park Order 1978.
(2)
This order shall come into force on 1 January 1979.
2 Fiordland National Park
The Fiordland National Park shall comprise the areas of land defined in the Schedule.
3 Revocation
The Order in Council made on 12 April 1977 (Gazette, 28 April 1977, p 1216) redefining the boundaries of the Fiordland National Park is hereby revoked.
Schedule The Fiordland National Park
Southland and Otago Land Districts—Lake, Fiord, and Wallace Counties
All that area in the Southland and Otago Land Districts, Lake, Fiord, and Wallace Counties, containing 1,212,000 hectares, more or less, bounded by a line commencing at Stripe Point on the southern boundary of Wilmot Survey District and proceeding, generally, north-easterly along the mean high-water mark of the sea, and crossing the mouth of the Hollyford River to a point in line with the northern boundary of Section 17, Block I, Martins Bay Survey District; thence due east to and along that boundary and due south along the eastern boundary of Section 17 aforesaid, to the northern boundary of Section 15; thence easterly along that boundary to the north-east corner of Section 15; thence, generally, southerly along the generally easterly boundaries of Sections 15, 12, 9, 14 and 13 to the south-eastern corner of Section 13; thence westerly along the southern boundaries of Sections 13 and 4 and the production of the last-mentioned boundary to the western side of an unnamed road intersecting the said Section 4; thence again westerly along the southern boundary of Section 4 and its production to the right bank of the Hollyford River; thence southerly along that bank to a point in line with the northern boundary of Section 6; thence, generally, easterly to and along the generally northern boundaries of Sections 6 and 8 and the production of the last-mentioned boundary to the eastern side of an unnamed road intersecting the said Section 8; thence westerly and southerly along the northern and eastern boundaries of Section 8 to the north-western corner of Section 16; thence easterly and southerly along the northern and eastern boundaries of that section to the northern boundary of Section 43, Block II, Martins Bay Survey District; thence easterly along the northern boundaries of Sections 43, 65 and 66, and southerly along the eastern boundary of Section 66 and the production of that boundary to the northern boundary of Section 68; thence easterly along that boundary and southerly along the eastern boundaries of Sections 68 and 67 to the south-eastern corner of Section 67 aforesaid; thence westerly along the southern boundary of Section 67, to and southerly along the eastern boundary of Section 64, to and westerly along the southern boundary of Section 64 to the eastern boundary of Section 63; thence southerly along that boundary to the northern boundary of Section 37; thence easterly along the northern boundaries of Sections 37, 39 and 40, and southerly along the eastern boundary of Section 40 to its south-eastern corner; thence due east to a point in line with the western boundary of Section 22, Block II, Martins Bay Survey District; thence due south to the south-western corner of Section 22 and easterly along the southern boundary of that section to its south-eastern corner; thence south-easterly along a right line between that corner and Trig ZO, Martins Bay Survey District; thence south-easterly along a right line to the north-western corner of Run 472; thence easterly along the northern boundary of Run 472 and its production to the left (east) bank of the Pyke River; thence, generally, north-easterly along the left bank of the Pyke and Forgotten Rivers to a point in line with the continuation of a leading ridge dividing the watersheds of the Pyke River and the Olivine Branch of the Forgotten River at the northern end of the Bryneira Range; thence, generally, south-easterly to and along the said ridge and, generally, south-westerly along the watershed, aforesaid, passing through Alabaster Pass, Courtenay Peak, and Welshman to an unnamed peak in the Bryneira Range; thence, generally, south-easterly along the ridge dividing the watersheds of the Olivine Branch of the Forgotten River and the Hidden Falls Creek passing through Cow Saddle to Niobe Peak; thence, generally, south-westerly along the watershed between the Hollyford and Dart Rivers, passing through Poseidon Peak, Park Pass, Nereus, North Col, Conical Hill, Harris Saddle, Trig N Ocean Peak, Emily Pass, to Emily Peak; thence, generally, south-westerly along the main ridge of the Ailsa Mountains to a point on the bush edge approximately 500 metres due east from the head of Lake McKellar; thence, generally, southerly along that bush edge to the northern boundary of Run 756; thence due west to the western boundary of Run 756 as shown on SO Plan 18471, lodged in the office of the Chief Surveyor at Dunedin; thence, generally, southerly along the generally western boundaries of Run 756 and Part Run 431 as shown on the said plan, to the East Branch of the Eglinton River; thence, generally, south-westerly along the left bank of the East Branch of the Eglinton River to the southernmost corner of part Run 431, situated in Clintonside Survey District; thence north-easterly along the Otago-Southland Land District boundary to the bush edge; thence generally, south-westerly along the bush edge to a point due west of Winton Peak; thence due west to the eastern boundary of part Run 394; thence, generally, westerly along the generally northern boundary of part Run 394 and its production to the western side of No 94 State Highway; thence, generally, south-westerly along the generally north-western boundaries of part Run 394, as shown on SO Plan 6251, Southland Land District, to the northern boundary of Lot 1, DP 5999, Block III, Eglinton Survey District; thence easterly and southerly along the northern and eastern boundaries of that Lot to the north-western corner of Section 4, Block III, aforesaid; thence southerly along the western boundary of Section 4, aforesaid to the western side of No 94 State Highway; thence southerly along the western side of that Highway to the south-eastern corner of Section 9, Block III, aforesaid; thence westerly along the southern boundary of Section 9 aforesaid and its production to the western boundary of part Run 394; thence southerly along the western boundary of part Run 394 to the northern boundary of part Section 1, Block III, aforesaid; thence easterly along the northern boundary of part Section 1 aforesaid and its production to the eastern side of No 94 State Highway; thence easterly, southerly and westerly along the northern, eastern and western boundaries of part Section 1, Block III, Eglinton Survey District, and Blocks X, IX and IV, Te Anau Survey District, and the production of the last-mentioned boundary to the western side of No 94 State Highway; thence westerly along the southern boundary of part Section 1, aforesaid to the eastern shore of Lake Te Anau; thence generally southerly along the generally eastern shore of Lake Te Anau to the right (west) bank of the Waiau River; thence, generally, south-westerly along the right bank of the Waiau River to a point in line with the south-western boundary of Section 1, Block IV, Manapouri Survey District; thence south-easterly to and along that boundary to the southernmost corner of the said Section 1; thence, generally, southerly along the generally western boundary of part Run 176D to its south-westernmost corner; thence westerly along the northern side of a public road to the shore of Lake Manapouri; thence, generally, southerly along the generally eastern shore of Lake Manapouri to the right (west) bank of the Waiau River; thence south-easterly along the right bank of the Waiau River to the western boundary of Run 427; thence, generally, southerly along that generally western boundary to the right bank of the Waiau River; thence south-westerly along the right bank of the Waiau River to the northern boundary of part Run 463; thence, generally, south-westerly along the generally north-western boundaries of part Run 463 to the north-western side of Lake Monowai River; thence south-westerly along that roadside and its production to the shore of Lake Monowai; thence, generally, south-westerly along the watershed between Lake Monowai and Dean, Hindley and Lill Burns to the summit of the Kaherekoau Mountains at National Grid Reference S12/485 570; thence, generally, south-easterly along the watershed between the streams flowing into Lake Hauroko and the streams flowing into the Lill Burn, to a point at National Grid Reference S12/535 480; thence easterly along a right line to a point on the western boundary of Section 15, Block XII, Hauroko Survey District, being peg LXXVII, SO Plan 7482, Southland Land District; thence, generally, southerly along the western boundaries of Section 15, aforesaid, to the northern side of the Lillburn Valley Road; thence westerly along the northern side of the aforesaid road to a point in line with the eastern boundary of Section 32, Block XII, Hauroko Survey District; thence southerly along a right line to and along that eastern boundary to the southernmost corner of Section 32, aforesaid; thence south-westerly along the south-eastern boundaries of Section 31, Block XII, Hauroko Survey District, to the southernmost corner of that section; thence due west to the watershed between Lake Hauroko and Thicket Burn at National Grid Reference S12/538 462 thence south-easterly along the aforesaid watershed to Trig Station C; thence, generally, south-westerly along the watershed between Lake Hauroko and the northern tributaries of the Waikoau River to Trig Station E, The Hump; thence southerly along the Hump Ridge to a point at National Grid Reference S12/466 333; thence westerly along the watershed between the Waitapu Stream and the Kaikokopu Stream to the left (east) bank of the Wairaurahiri River; thence due west to the right bank of the Wairaurahiri River; thence north-westerly along the watershed between the Rata Burn and another stream flowing into the Wairaurahiri River to a point on the bush edge at National Grid Reference S12/377 395; thence, generally, westerly along the bush edge to a point at National Grid Reference S12/300 395; thence south-westerly along a right line to a point 40 metres from the shore of Lake Poteriteri at National Grid Reference S12/286 389; thence southerly and northerly along a line parallel to and distant 40 metres, from the shore of Lake Poteriteri, to a point on the watershed running from Trig Station G in Block IV, Waitutu Survey District, to a point on the western shore of Lake Poteriteri at National Grid Reference S12/279 279; thence north-westerly along the aforesaid watershed and its continuation, through Trig Station G to Trig Station 16682; thence south-westerly along the main watershed to Trig Station T, Mount Aitken; thence, generally, westerly along a spur to a point 40 metres from the northern shore of Lake Hakapoua at National Grid Reference S12/166 289; thence, generally, southerly along a line parallel to and 40 metres distant from the generally eastern shore of Lake Hakapoua and the left (east) bank of Big River to the mean high-water mark of the sea; thence westerly and northerly along the mean high-water mark of the sea to the point of commencement; including the beds and waters of all internal rivers, lakes and streams; and including also Solander, Little Solander, Secretary, Resolution and all other Islands within all inlets, sounds and bays along that portion of the sea coast hereinbefore described; and including also Sections 139, 561, 562, 563 and 568, Block I, Manapouri Survey District; Section 25, Block IX and Section 2, Block X, Town of Manapouri, situated in Block I, Takitimu Survey District; Sections 28 and 31, Block I, Lillburn Survey District; but excluding all public roads; and also excluding Sections 1, 2, 5, 6 and 7, Block I, Sections 1, 3, 4, 6 and 11, Block III, Sections 5 and 7, Block V, Town of Jamestown; Sections 5 and 7, Block I, Sections 5, 17, 19, 21, 25, 29, 30 and 41, Block II, and Sections 5, 6 and 7, Block IX, Martins Bay Survey District; Sections 1 and 2, Block I, Hollyford Survey District; Sections 11, 18, 19 and 21, Block II, and sections 7 and 12, Block IV, Town of Cromarty, situated in Block VI, Preservation Survey District; Section 20, Block IV, Preservation Survey District.
